It is also a part of the famous OneWorld Alliance since 2014. It came into existence in the year 1978 when it was known as Air Lanka. It was established as the result of termination of flights run by Air Ceylon which was the original flag carrier of the country.
It was partly acquired by the popular Emirates Group in the year 1998 due to which it was renamed to SriLankan Airlines with the introduction of the present livery. The partnership with Emirates was ended due to some controversies but the airline still continues to use the rebranded logo and name.
